Small Business Administration Names Diane Valletta as Home-Based Business Champion of the Year

EVANSTON, IL (July 12, 2007) – Diane Valletta, owner of Valletta Associates, a marketing communications consulting firm, was named by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) the 2007 Home-Based Business Champion of the Year for the State of Illinois and all of Region V.

Valletta, along with six other award winners, was honored on June 27 during a Lake Michigan dinner cruise on the Odyssey II at Chicago’s Navy Pier, in conjunction with the 44th Annual Illinois Small Business Week program of activities.

“It is through small businesses that we see innovation thrive and grow,” said Steven C. Preston, SBA administrator.Small businesses take risks that others just would not take because they believe in a vision, and because they know that they will match every dollar of equity they put into the business with an equivalent $10 of sweat equity. National Small Business Week is our opportunity to showcase and recognize some of the best and brightest of those successful entrepreneurs.”

The award was presented by the SBA in partnership with SCORE (Service Corp of Retired Executives): Counselors to America’s Small Business, and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) Small Business Development Center Network.

The Home-Based Business Champion of the Year award honors a person who has experienced the rewards and difficulties of owning a home-based business and has volunteered to improve the climate for these businesses.

“I have always been an enthusiastic supporter of the running-a-business-from-home concept,” said Valletta.  “It’s a practical and economical solution – especially for women raising children.  And thanks to technology, I can serve clients across the country and around the world – writing their promotional materials, creating their website content, editing their books and newsletters, and helping them win awards – while at home in my proverbial nightgown.”

Leading up to this special week, the U.S. Small Business Administration, oftentimes in conjunction with public- and private-sector small business supporters, will host special events at the local and state levels to honor and present awards to the nation’s entrepreneurs and those who support and champion small business.
